Biography

Joanna Dudley is an internationally renowned director, performer, and artist from Australia. For over a decade, she has collaborated closely with South African artist William Kentridge and composer Philip Miller on groundbreaking projects.

Her performances have been presented at major venues and festivals worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, Art Basel (both Basel and Miami), Paris Philharmonie, Gropius Bau (Berlin), The Metropolitan Opera (New York), Louis Vuitton Foundation, Turbine Hall at TATE Modern (London), Avignon Festival, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Louisiana Museum, Park Avenue Armory (New York), and the Holland Festival.

Joanna’s video installation We Will Slam You with Our Wings—a seven-screen operatic piece featuring an army of six girls and one war mistress—is touring globally.

As a choreographer, she has worked with renowned conductor Seiji Ozawa, with premieres at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan and the Vienna State Opera. Other notable collaborators include Rufus Didwiszus, Damien Jalet, and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

Joanna has also served as a guest director and performer at Schaubühne in Berlin. She studied music at the Adelaide Conservatorium (Australia) and the Sweelinck Conservatorium (The Netherlands), and further immersed herself in traditional music, studying in Tokyo and Indonesia with the national treasure and pop icon, Waljinah.

In addition to her artistic practice, Joanna has taught at prestigious institutions such as the ECAV Academy for Arts (Valais, Switzerland), the F+F School for Art and Media Design (Zurich, Switzerland), the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, LASALLE College of the Arts (Singapore), Adelaide University (Australia), and the Academy of Arts (Berlin).
